About Our Parliament

A history of self-governance dating back to the 13th century.

By the mid-1700s, the States had become an established part of Island life. In the late 1700s the States of Deliberation began to take on the structure and role we would recognise today as Guernsey’s Parliament. This centuries-old tradition of local governance continues to shape the way decisions are made in Guernsey, through a system built on independence, accountability, and community representation.
