States of Election

A parliamentary meeting at which Jurats are selected.

The primary function of the States of Election is to elect individuals to the office of Jurat. When a vacancy arises, the States of Election meets on the first day of an ordinary meeting of the States of Deliberation to fill the position. Only one vacancy may be filled at each meeting.


Composition of the States of Election

The States of Election is composed of the following members:

  • The Bailiff
  • The 16 Jurats
  • The 10 Rectors
  • His Majesty’s Procureur
  • His Majesty’s Comptroller
  • The 38 People’s Deputies
  • 34 Douzaine Representatives

What is a Jurat?

Because there is no jury system in Guernsey, Jurats act as a jury, and are judges of fact in both civil and criminal cases, reaching decisions by a simple majority.
